8 Behind-The-Scenes Featurettes
- Audio Commentaries -- There are ten tracks in total which include comments from series creator/ executive producer Ronald Moore, director Michael Rymer, and executive producer David Eick. Five of the commentaries are recordings of Moore's iTunes podcasts, but that shouldn't detract anyone from digging through each of them. There's a ton of information about the challenges of recreating a classic series, the story, the characters, the relevance of the plotlines, and more. It was especially interesting to hear candid comments on mistakes that were made and the elements of the end product that the creators were disappointed with. I really enjoyed listening to Moore and company discuss their creative decisions and the styles they used to make 'Battlestar' such a unique visual and audible experience.
- Behind the Scenes Documentary (SD, 63 minutes) -- This documentary is divided into eight fairy self-explanatory sections: From Miniseries to Series, Change is Good, Now They're Babes, The Cylon Centurion, Future/Past Technology, The Doctor is Out of His Mind, Production, Visual Effects, and Epilogue.
Each section is rife with exceptionally succinct material that didn't leave me with many questions. Just be warned that there are some big plot spoilers throughout. Make sure you've watched all of the episodes before you hit this one. - Deleted Scenes (SD, 66 minutes) -- The deleted scenes are spread across all six discs and include the scenes from the Season One DVD set and the standalone miniseries DVD. This is the first time both collections of scenes are available in the same set. It's a vast group of cuts that include scene extensions, alternate takes, and complete deletions. Most of the scenes were cut to make the episodes shorter -- as such, they offer a lot of great material and shouldn't be avoided.
- Sketches and Art (SD, 4 minutes) -- A montage of storyboards and production designs set to music from the series. This is a brief but decent extra that will mainly appeal to purists.
- Picture In Picture Track -- Instead of getting a PiP commentary packed with new info, the HD DVD producers simply sap the majority of the material from the "Behind the Scenes Documentary." I also assumed the PiP track would appear on multiple episodes, but instead it's limited to the miniseries. I certainly think this is the best way to view the behind-the-scenes content, but the lack of truly exclusive material is yet another disappointment on this release.
- Encyclopedia Galactica -- This U-Control feature is also limited to the miniseries. It allows you to examine vehicle and battleship schematics, character bios, and other production material. This is a simplistic addition that doesn't offer fans very much additional content aside from basic descriptions. Still, newcomers may find the text and images are far more valuable.
- Web-Enabled Connectivity -- Anyone who has their HD DVD player connected to the internet is able to sign up and download exclusive content, trailers, and updates. At the moment, the only content available is a handful of trailers and TV spots.
- MyScenes -- Universal's now-standard custom bookmarking function, allowing you to save your favorite chapters for playback even after you eject the disc.
